[ After the guards have left, a voice can be heard through the vent between Michael's cell and the next cell over.

It's a soft, raspy voice, and whoever is on the other end seems to have to work very hard to project it loudly enough for anyone to hear. ]

Hello. It's your first time here, isn't it?

[spawnofsatan]

[ He almost misses the voice, surveying his new accommodations as meager as they are. His attention turns to the vent and he leans against the wall to hear better. ]

It is. How could you possibly know that?

[obsnpcs]

[ He hums. ] I have my ways.

[ The anomaly had yet to sink its crystalline claws into this one. After a few nights in the SHU, Michael would walk away with the anomaly clinging to him like static.

Toby could sense that. A few days was enough to cause some effect on a person, and he's been in SHU without respite for twenty-three months. ]

I've never heard your voice before. [ He was listening in on whatever short conversation Michael had with the guard. ] Sorry for eavesdropping; there isn't much to do here but listen. I'm Toby.

[ He doesn't know what to expect of this, but he knows it will be something. Whatever it is, it's all part of his test. ]

I suppose it can't be helped in such close quarters. Michael. I've not heard your name come up.

I've been here a while. A lot of you don't know me. Some of the oldies have probably forgotten about me, too. Fame fades quickly, doesn't it?

[ He sighs, but it's more of a raspy croak. He isn't used to talking. Sometimes he goes weeks without another person in an adjacent cell, and even then there's no guarantee they'll talk to him. ]

It's for the best. I didn't have too many friends before they put me here.

[ Because he burned every bridge he could trying to get thrown in SHU long-term. ]

It's a bit hard to hold the spotlight when you're shoved in the closet.

[ He's curious how long 'a while' is, but isn't sure whether it's rude or not. Toby doesn't seem bothered by it, at least, which raises even more questions. ]

Unfortunate. Everyone could use a friend or two to watch their back. Though I'm certain it's an easy task when there's only a few feet in each direction.

[ There's a sound somewhere between a laugh and a wheeze. ]

I hope you've made some friends. I've heard through the grapevine that things have gotten even rougher.

[ Michael considers the statement with a hum. ]
